TEAM SUNSHINE: COLLECTING AND SPREADING SUNSHINE IN WASAGA BEACH THIS CHRISTMAS
WASAGA BEACH (December 5, 2011) – Team Sunshine will be driving through Wasaga Beach on December 5th and 19th, collecting food for The Wasaga Beach Ministerial Food Bank and toys for the Kinette Club of Wasaga Beach, as part of their 1st Annual Christmas Charity Drive. The Holiday Helpers can be recognised by their elfin hats and Christmas carols playing from their decorated vehicle. Collections on both days will begin at 7:00 PM and will target designated homes on each street visited. On December 5th, they will visit the Royal Beach / Silver Birch area and December 19th will cover the Goldfinch / Tamarack area off of Knox Road West.
Sunshine on a Cloudy Day has supported The Wasaga Beach Ministerial Food Bank since the store opened in 2006. Sunshine on a Cloudy Day’s Manager Debbie Cook has been instrumentally involved in a variety of initiatives supporting The Wasaga Beach Ministerial Food Bank, “We had great success with the first annual Walk With Paul event this July, in which we raised over $1700 for The Wasaga Beach Ministerial Food Bank and Breaking Down Barriers Independent Living Resource Centre. We wanted to do something extra during the Christmas season, given that the food bank is being used more than ever in these hard times,” she said.
The Wasaga Beach Ministerial Food Bank is more vital to the community now than ever before. Around one quarter of the Wasaga Beach population relies on the Food Bank. Each year sees an increase in registration. In 2006, 1404 people were registered at the Food Bank. By 2010, this number climbed to 5376 – an increase of over 280%. To qualify for assistance, applicants go through a short interview process in which they are asked to show proof of income and expenses. Once this is completed, they do not need to share any other personal information. All information is strictly confidential. The Wasaga Beach Ministerial Food Bank is located at 1360 Mosley St and is open on Tuesday 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM and Thursday 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM and 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM.
The Kinette Club of Wasaga Beach is a non-profit organization that fundraises for the community and cystic fibrosis research. They run a Toys for Kids campaign each Christmas, dedicated to providing gifts to less fortunate families in Wasaga Beach with children under 16 years old. Toys for Kids gave toys to 369 local children last Christmas. Toys for Kids Chairperson, Doris Comly, is calling for donations of gender and age appropriate gifts, including educational material, particularly for children 10 years and older. Donations for boys are especially needed; Comly recommends gift certificates, sports equipment, books, and arts and craft supplies. Monetary donations are also welcome. Hats, gloves and mittens for all ages are always in need. Comly requests that no donations of stuffed animals be made and that all gifts be unwrapped.
Donations for the 1st Annual Christmas Charity Drive can be made all December long in store at Sunshine on Cloudy Day, at 174 Main Street, Wasaga Beach. Call 705-422-1154 or visit sunshineonacloudyday.ca for operating hours. In addition to the collections, the store is running a Gourmet Christmas Gift Basket Charity Raffle, with the prize valued at $65. Tickets are $2 each and can be purchased in store until the draw date of December 23 and all proceeds will be donated to The Wasaga Beach Ministerial Food Bank.
